What is a face serum?

A serum is a concentrated liquid treatment that targets specific skin concerns. Learn how to use a face serum and find the perfect option for your skin type and needs.

What is a serum & how does it work?

A serum is a concentrated liquid treatment that delivers topical ingredients to the skin in order to target concerns like wrinkles, discoloration and uneven texture. Serums are typically thinner than a moisturizer, but thicker than a toner or essence. The silky formulas can penetrate deep into the skin to effectively deliver active ingredients.

Should you use a serum on your skin?

Serums, since they contain potent actives, should be applied to clean, freshly washed skin—that way, they have more opportunity to penetrate the skin and do their work. According to board-certified dermatologist and founder of MMSkincare Ellen Marmur, M.D., skin care products should be applied from thinnest to thickest.

Why are serums so expensive?

Marmur says serums are usually more expensive because of the powerful active ingredients that you won't find in a standard moisturizer or other skin care products. These actives are the secret to addressing specific concerns, so the quality of ingredient can drive up the price tag. But take note, Marmur says, expensive doesn't always mean better.
